Hambidge Creative Artist Residency Program, Georgia

Hambidge’s Residency Program opens mid-February and closes mid-to late-December through the month of January. Application deadlines are:

  • Apply from December 1st through January 15th for the May through August residency period.
  • Apply from March 1st through April 15th for the September through December residency period.
  • Apply from August 1st through September 15th for the mid-February through April residency period.

WHO COMES TO HAMBIDGE

Visual artists, writers, poets, scientists, ceramicists, musicians, choreographers, chefs and beyond. Hambidge encourages applications from creative minds representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics.

Below are the categories in which applicants are judged by our distinguished panelists.

VISUAL ARTS
Book Arts, Ceramics, Conceptual Art, Digital Imaging, Drawing, Environmental Art, Fiber Arts, Film & Video, Installation Arts, Metalworking, Mixed Media, Multimedia Art, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Woodworking

We do not have darkroom or printmaking facilities, but provide exploration space for artists working in those disciplines. Those working in wood or metal must bring their own tools and machinery.

DESIGN 
Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Environmental Design

WRITING
Fiction, Poetry, Journalism, Literary Nonfiction, Nonfiction, Cookbooks, Playwriting, Screenwriting, Storytelling

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

WHAT
Hambidge provides a residency program that empowers talented artists to explore, develop, and express their creative voices. Situated on 600 acres in the mountains of north Georgia, Hambidge is a sanctuary of time and space that inspires artists working in a broad range of disciplines to create works of the highest caliber.

We pledge to offer a nurturing retreat for artists, preserve Hambidge’s pristine natural environment, and provide public educational programming.

WHO
Artists and other creative thinkers from throughout the United States and around the world; residencies are awarded by juried panels for two to eight weeks.

WHEN
Hambidge’s Residency Program opens mid-February and closes mid-to late-December through the month of January. Application deadlines are:

  • Apply from December 1st through January 15th for the May through August residency period.
  • Apply from March 1st through April 15th for the September through December residency period.
  • Apply from August 1st through September 15th for the mid-February through April residency period.

FEES & SCHOLARSHIPS
Resident Fellows pay $200 per week (of the $1250 per week cost)

Limited scholarships for first-time residents are available, and include the following:

  • National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship provides a $700 stipend and waives the $400 residency fee for a 2 week residency for the top nine resident applicants.
  • Fulton County Arts Council Fellowship provides a $700 stipend and waives the $400 residency fee for a 2 week residency for the top three Fulton County resident applicants.
  • Nellie Mae Rowe Fellowship provides a 2 week residency with no fees ($400) to an African-American artist.
  • The Joe Quattlebaum Fellowship provides a $700 stipend and waives the $400 residency fee for a 2 week residency for a Southern artist actively involved in sustainability, environmental consciousness, or gardening & botany.
  • The Bella Cucina (Art of Food) Fellowship provides a 2 week residency with no fees ($400) to a culinary artisan.
  • The Post Hope Fellowship sponsored by Post Properties provides a $700 stipend and waives the $400 residency fee for a 2 week residency for an outstanding residency applicant.

STUDIOS
Hambidge has 9 secluded cottage/studios which provide living and working space, feature great views, lots of privacy, kitchens and bathrooms.

MEALS
Resident Fellows gather each evening Tuesday through Friday in Lucinda’s Rock House for delicious vegetarian fare prepared by our talented chef.

SETTING
Hambidge is located on 600 pristine acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains featuring nature trails, meadows, waterfalls, a swimming hole, an abundance of wild flowers and crisp, clean mountain air.

APPLICATION FOR RESIDENCY

Application Deadlines:

  • Apply from December 1st through January 15th for the May through August residency period.
  • Apply from March 1st through April 15th for the September through December residency period.
  • Apply from August 1st through September 15th for the mid-February through April residency period.

Hambidge is closed from mid-December to mid-February.

Hambidge utilizes SlideRoom for residency applications which requires signing up and creating a password. You will be able to save incomplete applications and return to them later.  Below is a summary of the information requested on the application.  Hambidge will only accept on-line applications.

Note: All new applicants will automatically be considered for the NEA Fellowship which provides a $700 stipend and waives the $400 residency fee for two week residencies. This is offered to the nine top scoring candidates.
