Denali Artist-in-Residence Program
for Artists, Writers & Composers

April 16, 2018: Applicants for 2019, please note that changes are currently being considered for the 2019 art program. Please stay tuned to this space for future announcements.

Deadline for Applications: September 30, 2018

The Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to exploring new ways for visitors to experience Denali. From hundreds of competitive applications each year, about a half-dozen accomplished artists, writers, and composers are invited by the park superintendent to spend time at a historic ranger cabin in Denali at their own expense the following summer. Visits also include a permit for limited driving access along the park road.

During their residency, each participant is required to lead a public outreach activity with visitors. Visitors enjoy sharing hands on activities and time with our artists, and in turn find unique ways to connect with Denali on a more personal level. Artists may choose to donate finished work to the park, however, due to lack of appropriate storage and display locations, the park prefers digital and performance based donations. Artists are challenged to create artwork and / or activities for visitors that offer a fresh and innovative perspective drawn from their own experience.

Several year round gallery spaces beyond park boundaries allow the opportunity for many donated works to enjoy some time in the public eye. Our digital gallery is enjoyed by many who visit us by website long before or after their actual trip in the park

Costs of program operations and collateral-duty staffing are supported by visitor entry fees. Costs of supplies for free outreach activities are provided by Alaska Geographic with funds derived from purchases at park bookstores.

Denali seeks a diverse suite of voices to share the unique story and important messages in Denali through art. We are asking artists this year to focus on the topic of “Staying Safe with Wildlife.” Alaska Native artists are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications are accepted through an online process hosted by CaFÉ ( Entries will be accepted from June 1 to September 30 this year. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. An alternative application can be submitted to the Artist in Residence Coordinator if lack of computer access or bandwidth prevents use of the CaFÉ system. Applicants ages 16-18 are required to submit an additional parental consent form. Please email Artist in Residence Coordinator, Cinnamon Dockham or call (907) 683-9581.
