• Silkscreen: Tuesdays

January 24, 2017 to February 28, 2017 (6 Tuesdays 6 pm – 9 pm)

Learn the most popular printmaking technique, which can transform any drawing into beautiful prints. This 6-week class is your chance to learn how to transfer images on screens, make stencils, layer colours, register images and print your final images. Students will create multiple colour images onto paper while learning safe studio procedures from SNAP’s Emerging Artist in Residence Jordan Blackburn. This course will prepare you with the skills necessary to create your own prints and to independently use the silkscreen facilities at SNAP.

*Please note this class is for creating screen prints on paper and not on fabric however, the skills taught during the class are transferrable to fabric printing.

• Plate Lithography

January 26, 2017 to March 2, 2017 (6 Thursdays 6 pm – 9 pm)

This unique 6-week course instructs students how to develop and print with both photo-litho and hand-drawn lithography plates, yielding incredibly diverse results.

Lessons will kick off with an overview of the lithographic history and an introduction to digital processes using SNAP’s new Digital Lab to prepare images for photo-litho plates. Informative demonstrations and hands-on instruction will focus on plate-lithography preparation and will work through the process of printing images on both the Offset and Etching presses. Upon completion of the course, students will be capable of preparing and processing different types of litho plates, as well as printing independently.

• Print Sampler

Wondering which print medium is for you? If all of the techniques sound exciting then this 5-week Print Sampler class is a great place to start. In this fast-paced class you will get a hands-on taste of: Intaglio, Lithography, Relief and Silkscreen. This class focuses on creating imagery through a variety of techniques and processes. Explore printmaking by silk screening stencils, printing intricate drawn designs on lithography plates, creating collagraph plates full of intriguing textures and capturing carved imagery in relief blocks. Try combining these processes to create a layered suite of unique and rich prints. Each class will cover a different technique and give you an opportunity to try out the many exciting and diverse processes available at SNAP. Participants should bring a selection of found objects, textures and materials to work from.

• Silkscreen on Fabric

February 25, 2017 to February 26, 2017 (1 Weekend (Saturday & Sunday) 10 am – 5 pm)

Learn to silkscreen your favorite graphics, words or patterns using vivid colours of ink onto any piece of fabric; t-shirts, pillowcases, tote bags, tea towels… anything you can imagine that is fabric! During this weekend workshop, Artist Alex Linfield will teach participants how to create one-of-a-kind hand printed fabrics using the silkscreen process. You will develop a basic understanding of the techniques and execution of silkscreen printing onto fabrics. Participants will be supplied with their choice of one t-shirt, tea towel or tote bag but are encouraged to bring other light-coloured fabric items from home (pillowcases, scarves, shirts, etc.) A limited selection of other fabric items will also be available to purchase. Participants should bring a selection of drawings, designs or photographs to work from.

• Introduction to Letterpress

Calling all letterpress aficionados! Over the weekend, you will be hand-setting antique metal type and creating an accompanying image on linoleum blocks which will be printed in two colours on SNAP’s Vandercook and Challenge proofing presses. This workshop begins with a short discussion of letterpress history, terms, tools, type and papers. Typesetting, lock-up, make-ready, print registration, printing and cleanup will be covered. Participants are invited to come with a short written quotation to work with.

• Etching: Level 2

March 14, 2017 to April 11, 2017 (5 Tuesdays

In this 5-week intermediate etching course learn a variety of advanced techniques for printing and producing copper etching plates. SNAP’s Emerging Artist in Residence Jonathan Green will teach you how to prepare the copper plate with a variety of ground applications for line etching, textural/tonal soft ground etching, drypoint and aquatint techniques. Explore image transfer methods and work from your own drawings or collages as you enhance your skills in etching. You will etch multiple copper plates to create layered and refined images and print them on the press using a variety of inks and papers. Learn safe studio procedures, proper ink application, registration methods and print and curate your final images.

*This course is ideal for those who have had an introduction to intaglio processes and want to refine their etching and printing abilities.

• Relief Print

Learn one of the earliest and boldest printmaking techniques: Relief Printing. In this Introductory 4-week course you will learn various techniques for carving a relief image into both linoleum and woodblock. You can expect to learn the same silkscreen skills but this time from Artist Morgan Wedderspoon. You will learn how to create stencils, expose screens and print multiple colour layers on to paper in this 6-week class. This course will prepare you with the skills necessary to create your own prints and to independently use the silkscreen facilities at SNAP.

• Letterpress Portraits

Gain inspiration from Sara Norquay’s Portrait Exhibition displayed in the Printshop’s Jasper Avenue Window, and create your very own hand-carved and printed portrait during this weekend workshop. Artist, Sara Norquay will teach image transfer and carving techniques for a small portrait of the participants’ choosing. Choose from hand-carving your own self-portrait or a portrait of someone else and create a linoleum relief block with a strong graphic presence full of mark-making. You will learn how to ink up your block and print it on the Vandercook and Challenge Letterpresses. Participants should bring their chosen portrait with them (digital copy or physical copy) to turn into a print.

• Mixed Media Printmaking: Photo Transfers & Screen Printing

Explore mixed media methods during this 3-week class by incorporating photo transfer techniques with silkscreen printing. You will learn how to transfer your photos onto wood by manually separating ink from paper and removing all of the paper fibers by hand. The photo transfer wizard,Caitlin Bodewitz will teach you her tips and tricks for achieving flawless photo transfers and how to integrate layers of design, shapes or text over top using handmade stencils and colourful screen inks. At the end of the class you will take home a series of 2 to 3 unique wood panel prints!
