Indigenous Curatorial Research Practicum – Walter Phillips Gallery
July 14, 2017 – July 27, 2018
Application Deadline: May 10, 2017
This practicum is designed for emerging curators to enhance knowledge, build day-to-day administrative skills, and provide work experience in the area of arts administration. Individuals will work with the director of Visual and Digital Arts and the curator of Walter Phillips Gallery. The participant will receive mentorship on research practices that support the presentation, production, and critical analysis of contemporary art. The practicum candidate will have access to the archives and collection of Walter Phillips Gallery to produce an exhibition and other public presentations.

Collections Practicum – Walter Phillips Gallery
June 1, 2017 – June 1, 2018
Application Deadline: May 10, 2017
This hands-on opportunity allows an individual to work with the Walter Phillips Gallery’s director and curator. The participant will receive mentorship on collections management practices and registrar duties that support the gallery’s collection of over 1,200 works. The practicum candidate will have access to the archives and collection of Walter Phillips Gallery, to foster research opportunities for other public presentations.

Digital Media Studio Practicum
July 4, 2017 – June 29, 2018
Application Deadline: May 10, 2017
Studio Practicum programs expand and enhance participants’ technical and conceptual skills, and increase knowledge in the various mediums supported by the Visual + Digital Arts areas. The Digital Media Studio Practicum program offers practical experience in the areas of video production and post-production, audio, animation, interactive media, computational media, and digital fabrication for use in artistic practice.

Ceramics Studio Practicum
July 4, 2017 – June 29, 2018
Application Deadline: May 10, 2017
This program offers practical experience in ceramics techniques and building processes, kiln firing (electric, gas, soda, raku, and wood), and ceramics studio operation for the support of artistic practice.

Indigenous Studio Practicum
July 4, 2017 – March 30, 2018
Application Deadline: May 10, 2017
There are currently opportunities for Indigenous participants in digital media, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. An Indigenous artist will be selected for one, or all, of these mediums based on artistic merit and technical skill.

Independent Residency: September 2017
September 11 – October 20, 2017
Application Deadline: May 24, 2017
This residency provides time and space for artists, curators, and arts professionals to create, research, experiment, and cultivate new directions in their work. In addition to a private studio space and shared facility use, artists are surrounded by a community of artistic peers and have the opportunity to attend inspiring talks and performances by world-renowned visiting artists, all within Banff Centre’s spectacular mountain setting.

Preparatorial Practicum
August 21, 2017 – August 24, 2018
Application Deadline: May 24, 2017
This program offers the participant hands-on opportunities working alongside the Walter Phillips Gallery’s preparator and curator. Mentorship and support is provided to develop the participant’s skills in preventative conservation, art handling, installation techniques, and museum standards in environmental conditions (including appropriate humidity, temperature, and lighting levels). The participant will also have the opportunity to gain expertise in crate building, art packing, and framing of artwork.

Geologic Time
September 11 – October 6, 2017
Application Deadline: May 24, 2017
This Banff International Curatorial residency asks: How might a geologic lens affect artistic and curatorial practice? This program of fieldwork, seminars, and independent study will ponder geological formations and stratigraphy, minerals, and resource extraction to speculate about a more expansive, slower and longer-term view of art, exhibitions, and their institutions.

Mountain Photography Residency
September 2 – 9, 2017
Application Deadline: June 7, 2017
This residency provides photographers with an opportunity to learn how to tell compelling visual narratives through images. Individualized interaction with celebrated National Geographic photographer Cory Richards will allow participants to address aspects of the creative process, artistic voice, storytelling, and authenticity in their mountain-themed photographic project.

Printmaking Studio Practicum
September 5, 2017 – August 31, 2018
Application Deadline: June 21, 2017
Practicum participants will receive regular mentorship and feedback from Studio Facilitators and staff in support of their professional development. Under the guidance of the Printmaking Facilitator, participants assist staff in the delivery of Visual + Digital Arts residency programs and events, learn maintenance and safe operation of studio facilities, and provide assistance to artists-in-residence working in this area.

Sculpture Studio Practicum
September 5, 2017 – August 31, 2018
Application Deadline: June 21, 2017
The Sculpture Practicum program offers practical experience in the areas of tool maintenance and safety, woodworking with hand tools and heavy equipment (table saw, band saw, planer, jointer, miter saw), metal working and metal casting (bronze and aluminum), and training in sculpture studio operation for support of artistic practice.

Inherent Design
November 6 – December 8, 2017
Application deadline: July 5, 2017
Faculty: Joar Nango, Ursula Johnson
This program will explore several global Indigenous perspectives on architecture, traditional design methodologies, and materials. Participants will delve into the history, function, and contemporary explorations and appropriations of Indigenous design and architecture. Participants will bring their own diverse perspectives and backgrounds, and will discover other types of knowledge and processes that can inform their studio practices, public art, community, and architecture based practices.

Independent Residency: November 2017
November 6 – December 8, 2017
Application deadline: July 5, 2017
