All the winners will be announced in Black+White Photography (issue 212, February 2018), which is out on 18 January 2018.

The World of People
Submit your photographs of individuals or groups – this can be from formal portraits to street photography to photojournalism. Show us the people that make up this world through your unique vision.

The World Around Us
We all experience the world in different ways and the images we make reflect that. We want to see the best landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and wildlife photographs in monochrome.

The Creative World
For this category we want you to let your imagination roam. Enter your best creative work, from still life to abstract, from using old processes to smartphone filters, or anything else you think fits. What images are eligible to be submitted?
Images that have been previously published in any media are eligible for entry. Images that have been entered into or commended by a competition are also eligible. Pictures can be taken in any style and with any equipment.

However, images that have won a category or an overall award in a national or international level competition on or before the deadline date are not eligible to be entered.

Images taken by the entrant at any time are eligible. There is no set time-frame in which images must have been taken.

How much image manipulation is allowable?
Image manipulation on a computer or in the darkroom is allowed.

The judges will be looking for a sophisticated and gentle approach to image editing, so avoid overdoing any particular image adjustment unless it clearly adds to the interpretation of the photograph.

Do I need a model release form?
It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure they have the relevant model releases and licences, where required.

What format and size do the images need to be for submission?
Images should be uploaded in JPEG RGB format at 300ppi with a compression quality of between 8 and 10 (between 75 and 85 when using Adobe Lightroom). The image should be sized between 1500 pixels and 2100 pixels on its longest side.

To help us during the shortlisting process, please make sure you include your first and second name in each file name before you upload them to the website. If submitting multiple images, please include numbers accordingly – for example: Joe Blogs 1, Joe Blogs 2 and Joe Blogs 3.

When will the winners be announced?
The competition deadline is midnight GMT on Monday 30 October 2017. The overall winners will be announced in the February issue (issue 212) of Black+White Photography, which is published on 18 January 2018.

How much does it cost to enter?

To enter a single category of Black+White Photographer of the Year the entry fee is £10. You may enter up to five pictures for £10.

You can pay to enter as many categories as you want and you can enter the same category multiple times. You can also submit the same image to different categories, upon payment of the extra fee.

How do I pay?
We use Paypal to process our payments, but that doesn’t mean you need a Paypal account. When you click ‘Checkout’ you’ll be taken to Paypal and it will give you two options: 1) Pay with my Paypal Account and 2) Pay with debit or credit card.

I don’t like to make online payments. Can I send a cheque or pay by phone?
No. With PayPal, you do not need to set up an account with them to be able to pay using a credit or debit card. As all images submitted to the competition must be uploaded online via the BPOTY website, we, unfortunately, cannot accept offline payments for entry. If you have any issues while using PayPal then please do get in touch with us – see below – and we will do our best to assist you.

What image rights do you require, and do I retain copyright?
The copyright of images submitted remains at all times with the photographer.

GMC Publications, Black+White Photography and the sponsor will require the rights to use the submitted images in direct association with the promotion and reporting of the competition only. We won’t use your images for anything else without your express permission beforehand. And we certainly won’t be selling your images or data to anyone else.
