McLuhan House Art Studio Residency

Arts Habitat Edmonton is a non-profit organization engaged in finding, managing and developing space for the arts. McLuhan House is envisioned to be an interpretive centre for Herbert Marshall McLuhan’s life and legacy of thought. Arts Habitat purchased, restored and designated the McLuhan residence as a municipal historical resource for guests to enjoy a micro museum celebrating the legendary Dr. McLuhan.McLuhan House also hosts well-defined cultural programming and curated events that explore McLuhan’s belief that “The medium is the message,” and incorporate the “global theatre.” Artist-in-Residence are expected to provide a minimum of 2 exhibitions/events throughout the term of the residency. These events are at the discretion of the artist(s).

The shop has no running water, however the Artist-in-Residence has access to McLuhan House’s basement utility sink, main floor kitchen and washroom facilities only.
Minor alterations to the space are allowed with permission.
Noise limitation are in effect between 11 pm and 9 am.
The use of the studio space includes free utilities.
Artist fees, materials and supplies are NOT provided by Arts Habitat.
Individual artists and collaborative teams in all disciplines are encouraged to submit a self-directed project proposal for an Artist Studio Residency Program beginning June 1, 2018, lasting for one year. Arts Habitat is seeking submissions from local artists to develop work-in-progress and produce original work, including, but not limited to visual art, craft, curatorial practice, dance, design, new media, performance, photography, sculpture, sound, video, and writing. The Artist-in-Residence will be able to engage with Arts Habitat staff and community, as well as guests of McLuhan House’s many events. Project proposals relating to Marshall McLuhan or his work are an asset.A multidisciplinary jury appointed by Arts Habitat evaluates all submissions, and the artist(s) will be chosen through a one-stage Selection Committee process unless otherwise determined by Arts Habitat. The selected jury includes artists and professionals selected for their skills, knowledge, and abilities by Arts Habitat. Arts Habitat juries will reflect diversity in disciplines. Jurors may serve at more than one deadline for the Art Studio Residency Space. Arts Habitat reserves the right to revoke the competition for the Artist Studio Residency Program.
Emphasis will be placed on finding an artist or artists with strong artistic work, and good potential to succeed in producing artwork in the available space/time. Demonstrated history of self-directed creation and presentation is required. Relevance to the legacy of Marshall McLuhan may be considered.
